5 V 5 BASKETBALL CONSIDERATIONS AND GENERAL INFORMATION

 

The 5 V 5 basketball league is designed to promote fair play, sportsmanship, and overall participation in an athletic atmosphere other than Interscholastic Varsity Competition. We ask that you adhere to all rules and stipulations presented.

 

MANDATORY PARTICIPATION FEE: All teams are required to pay a non-refundable participation fee of $10.00. This fee must be paid before a team can be scheduled for league participation.  

 

ALCOHOL AND DRUG POLICY: Individuals and/or teams who arrive to a scheduled competition intoxicated, suspected of consumption, or possessing alcohol and/or other illegal substances will not be permitted to play. The game will be forfeited immediately. There are no exceptions to this stipulation. The supervisor in charge will have the final decision, University Police may be called for assistance.

 

MEDICAL PROCEDURES: The Department of Intramural Sports will not assume the responsibility for any injuries received during competition. Participants are reminded that their participation is voluntary. We strongly recommend that all participants have a physical examination and secure medical health insurance. Any injury and/or accident should be reported immediately to the supervisor in charge.

 

SAFETY: Proper attire should be worn while competing. All jewelry watches, hats, and any other personal item should be removed before participation. Individuals wearing casts should have them padded and checked for approval with the supervisor in charge. Any person(s) bleeding and/or having blood on clothing will be removed from competition until this problem is resolved. Appropriate measures must be taken into account.

 

PLAYER PARTICIPATION: All players that appear on a team’s roster must be a current student, faculty, or staff member at Binghamton University. In addition, players can not be added after the first scheduled game.   Participants may only play on one team, on one day, in one league- recreational or competitive. Any team(s) that is found to be in violation will be subject to immediate removal from league play.  A valid ID CARD for all participants must be shown to the Intramural Staff Members before every game.

REMINDER: Only students not participating on the equivalence of the Collegiate Varsity Team (including red-shirts) are allowed to play in the league.  Violators may be subject to NCAA consequences.

 

CHALLENGING A GAME: If there is a discrepancy for any reason related to the outcome of a game, the following actions must be taken. The team making the challenge must make it in writing to The Department of Intramural Sports no later than two days after the original game has been played. The statement should include the names of the teams that participated in the Contest, the date of the contest, and the specific reason why the contest is being challenged. The Intramural Department Staff will then review the challenge and make a FINAL decision.

 

TEAM JERSEYS: We request all teams to supply their own team jerseys with numbers. All jerseys should match in color and have a number.  If two teams wear the same color, or do not have a team jersey, pinnies will be provided.

 

EQUIPMENT: All men and women’s basketballs for game play only will be provided. Appropriate footwear must be used. Improper footwear includes work boots, sandals, tivas, and any other open toe shoe.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

CANCELLATION/ FORFEIT OF GAMES: All games must start on time. However, all teams will have a maximum of 10 minutes after the official start time.  Any team that does not show for a scheduled game will be given a forfeit. If a team forfeits any scheduled game, they will terminated from league play. EXCEPTION: If a team knows they can not play a scheduled game, they will be allowed to reschedule. A call must be made at least 48hrs in advance to reschedule a game. The call should be made to the Intramural Program Office between the hours of 10am and 6pm.

 

CANCELLATION OF GAMES: Athletic teams have priority of West Gym use. At times, it may be necessary to postpone or cancel games. All captains will be notified ASAP. This could also mean up to a regularly scheduled game.

 

GAME TIME AND LENGTH:

 

OVERTIME PROCEDURE: There will be no tied games, unless unusual circumstances are present. There will be a 5 minute overtime period. Stop time the last minute.

 

SINGLE ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT: There will be a separate tournament for both the men’s recreational and competitive leagues as well as the women’s league.

NUMBERS OF PLAYERS ON COURT: 5 players are allowed on the court. Teams may start games with 4. Less than four players at the start of a game will result in a forfeit.

 

TIMEOUTS: Each team is allotted 3 per game. One Full (1 minute in length) and Two 30 second timeouts. The clock will stop if taken.

 

SUBSTITUTION OF PLAYERS: Players may only be substituted on dead ball situations and time outs. A dead ball occurs when the ball is ruled out of bound or a foul is committed. Illegal substitution will result in a loss of possession and a Team Technical Foul. Substitutes must be sent to the scorer’s table.

 

FORFEIT POLICY:  All games must start on time, but will start no later than 10 minutes past the scheduled start time. 

  1. Any team that does not have the minimum amount of players to start a game will receive an automatic forfeit, thus eliminating the team immediately from league play. 
  2. Any team that does not appear for a scheduled game will automatically be ejected from league play.

 

If a team can not attend a scheduled game, a 48 hour notice must be given to the Intramural Office.  Note: Missed game(s) will not be made-up, thus creating a potential elimination situation for tournament advancement.. 

 

 

 

SPORTSMANSHIP POLICY: All teams and players must refrain from abusive language while on the court to officials and opposing team members. Abusive language may include but is not limited to swearing, continuous challenge to official’s call, and inappropriate gestures. A violation of this policy will result in a Technical Foul and a warning to the entire team. If continued, each player in violation will be ejected for the remainder of the game.

 

SPECIFIC INTRAMURAL RULES, REGULATIONS, AND REMINDERS

 

(All other NCAA rules will be used if not mentioned below) Incidental contact is part of competition.

 

REMEMBER: ALL PLAYERS MUST HAVE THEIR UNIVERSITY ID TO PARTICIPATE NO ID, NO PLAY!

A jump ball will begin each game. The alternate possession rule will be used for all other jump ball situations.

All common fouls will result with the ball taken out by the offended team at a designated spot.

If an INTENTIONAL FOUL is committed, the offended team will retain possession of the ball after 2 foul shot attempts

If a FLAGRANT FOUL is committed, that player will be ejected immediately and suspended for one game. The offended team will retain possession and be awarded 2 foul shots.

If a TECHNICAL FOUL is called, the Sportsmanship Policy will be in effect. In addition, the opposing team will receive possession of the ball after 2 foul shots are attempted. Illegal substitution and too many players on the court constitute a team Technical Foul. Fighting will result in an automatic ejection and suspension from intramural participation until further notice.

Players will foul out of the game after committing their 5th personal foul

Bonus: Offended teams will shoot a 1-and-1 after the 6th team foul is committed. Offended teams will shoot 2 foul shots after the 10th team foul is committed. All personal fouls and player violations will in a loss of possession.

A men’s team will have 10 seconds to dribble the ball over half court.

Teams will have 5 seconds to pass a ball in bounds from a dead ball situation.

Players will be allowed to stay in the paint for only 3 seconds at a time.

A player must pass the ball within 5 seconds if dribble is picked up. The “Closely Guarded” rule will be used.

All players must be present and signed in at tip-off. If a player arrives late, a technical foul (2 shots) will be called for each player that chooses to participate.  Point of interruption rule will be used regarding possession.

Game length: two 18 minute halves, running time. Stop time the last 2 minutes of the 2nd half. Stop on made baskets the last minute of the 2nd half. Two minute half-time.

Forfeit after 10 minutes of original scheduled time.

OT: 5 minute running time. Stop-time the last minute only.

Number of players allowed to start: 4

Substitution: At score table, Illlegal subsititutions will resutl in a technical foul.

CHECK TEAM ROSTER’S! Name on game roster should be on master roster. No player additions to team rosters can be made after the first scheduled games. Extreme circumstances should be presented at the intramural office during the day sometime before your next game.

All shooting fouls will result in a foul shot attempt. If the shot is made, 1 foul shot will be Awarded. If the shot is not made, 2 foul shots will be taken.
